Spanx for Flowers-Keeping those Blooms Upright

There’s something deeply comforting about walking into your kitchen after a long day and being greeted by a vase of fresh flowers. Their quiet beauty, their effortless posture.

But here's a little secret: those graceful stems didn’t get that way on their own.

Behind every beautifully arranged bouquet is something practical—a simple netting system we lovingly call Spanx for Flowers. It’s not glamorous, but it’s essential. Because much like you, our flowers face their fair share of wind, weather, and dirty looks.

The Quiet Support Behind Every Stem

We use a netting called Hortanova, a soft yet strong grid that gently guides each flower upward. When our plants reach about 12 inches tall, we stretch this netting across the rows like a quiet promise—we’ve got you. As the flowers grow, they pass through the grid, supported but never restricted (more comfortable than Spanx).

Why is this so important? One windy Minnesota day or a single thunderstorm can undo weeks of growth. The plants may survive, but their stems twist sideways. And once that curve is there, it doesn’t go away. A stem that’s grown crooked will never grow straight again—no matter how much sunshine follows.

Netting is our insurance against that heartbreak. It holds each stem steady in the face of whatever the season brings, helping our flowers grow strong, tall, and harvest-ready—for you.

Beauty Takes a Little Intention

Is it a little trickier to harvest this way? Yes. Have you ever tried to put on Spanx when you’re sweating? It takes a bit more time, a bit more care, and definitely a bit more patience.

Cutting stems means reaching between squares and trying not to snap anything. And weeding? Let’s just say it’s not graceful.

But the result is worth it: tall, straight, storm-proof flowers that don’t give up after a tough day.

Save Your Sanity, Save the Netting

We do our best to save our netting each year. The trick is rolling it up neatly in the fall so that by summer, we’re not fighting with a giant plastic tangle while grumbling at each other like we’re assembling Christmas lights under pressure.

When you take home one of our bouquets, we want it to be more than just beautiful—we want it to stand tall and bring peace to you and your kitchen counter.

What You Don’t See Matters

You may never notice the netting. But we hope you feel it—in the way your bouquet holds itself, in the calm it brings, and in the reminder that a little support goes a long way.

From our field to your home, this is how we grow flowers that don’t just survive the storm—but flourish after it.
