Greenery: The Finishing Touch (Part 3)
This is the last part of our cut flower garden series—and this is the one that makes everything come together.
We’ve got our focal flowers and our fillers, but greenery is what ties the whole bouquet together. It’s what makes a bouquet look full and finished instead of kind of… whimpy. It fills in the gaps, softens everything, and makes it look like you knew exactly what you were doing (even if you were just out there cutting whatever looked good).
Don’t skip it.
Here are a few of my favorites that I always plant:
Eucalyptus
My FAV! The color, the texture, and that smell—it's just one of those things that makes a bouquet feel extra. It’s a slower grower for me, so it usually shows up a little later in the summer, but once it’s ready, I use it in everything.
Eucalyptus
Basil
Yep, basil. It works as greenery and a filler, which I love. Lemon basil and cinnamon basil are my go-to—both smell so good and add something a little different to your bouquets. And bonus, you can use it in your kitchen.
Frosted Explosion
This one is just fun. It has these tiny little bead-looking tips that almost shimmer in the light. I try to add it to most of my bouquets because it gives them a little something extra.
Dragon Cress
This is one of those plants that just works with everything. I especially love it early in the summer—it has that bright lime green color that freshens everything up and makes your bouquets feel full.
If you’ve been following along with this series, you’ve got everything you need now to grow a cut flower garden that actually gives you flowers for your kitchen table all summer long. Bonus, they all grow in our Minnesota short growing season.
And if you want a head start, we’ll have some of these at our plant sale at the 507 Outskirts on May 9th (the day before Mother’s Day). Come grab a few for your garden… and maybe one for your mom too.
