5 Simple Steps to Dry Your Summer Flowers

One of my favorite ways to hold onto summer is by drying flowers. It’s simple, beautiful, and lets you enjoy garden color all year long. No preservatives or fancy tricks—just nature doing its thing. Here’s how you can do it too:

Step 1: Harvest at the Right Time
Pick flowers at their peak, when blooms are open and vibrant but not yet fading. The better they look going in, the better they’ll look dried.

Step 2: Bundle Them Up
Gather small bunches and secure with a rubber band (it tightens as stems shrink, unlike string). Hooks work too—on the farm, we use a cattle panel fastened to the ceiling for easy hanging.

Step 3: Hang Upside Down
Hang flowers upside down to help them hold their shape. Leave space between bundles so air can circulate.

Step 4: Find the Right Spot
Choose a warm, dry space away from sunlight. Direct sun will bleach the colors, and we want to keep them as rich as possible.

Step 5: Let Them Dry
Two weeks is usually perfect. Once stems feel crisp and flowers are papery, they’re ready to use.

Favorite Flowers to Dry
Some flowers keep their beauty especially well. A few of our favorites are:

  • Marigolds

  • Celosia

  • Strawflower

  • Amobium

  • Cress

💐 If you’d rather enjoy ready-made beauty, we’ll have dried flower bouquets available this Saturday, August 23rd at The 507 Outskirt from 9 AM–3 PM.
